📜 **The K9 Unit’s Impact on Our Community:**

The Darke County Sheriff’s Office has three working K9 Officers: Annie, Bear, and Oakley.

Annie, a 5-year-old light red Bloodhound, is a single purpose officer whose duties involve tracking missing persons, including children, the elderly, or fugitives. Annie’s partner is Deputy Tyler Young.

Bear, a 6-year-old black German Shepherd, is a dual-purpose patrol officer whose duties include narcotics, search and seizure, apprehension, tracking, article searches, as well as general search and recovery. Bear’s partner is Deputy Colton Magel.

Oakley, a 4-year-old German Short-Haired Pointer, is a felony drug detection K9, and can also assist with article search, and tracking missing persons. Oakley’s partner is Deputy Jamie Joseph.

The donations received for the Darke County Sheriff’s Office K9 Deputies, help tremendously to offset some of the expenses to maintain the K9 program making it possible and affordable for the Sheriff’s Office to keep this program.

K-9 Officer Annie, Bear and Oakley, and their handlers had to complete 250 hours of state-certified training, with an additional 16 hours (minimum) each month, while serving on-duty. In Darke County, K-9 officers usually complete between 20 and 30 hours of additional training per month. Previous donations have been used for items such as ballistic vests for the K9’s protection, training bite suits, leashes, and harnesses.

When not on duty, Officers Annie, Bear, and Oakley go home with their handlers and enjoy “regular dog life,” of playing, resting, and enjoying the company of family, friends, and other dogs.

K9 Annie and K9 Oakley’s names pay homage to Darke County’s famous sharpshooter, Annie Oakley.
